Recapturing Childlike Wonder: A Faith-Filled Invitation

Updated: 2 days ago

In preschool, there are usually special guest or grandparent days where the child gets to invite someone special to their classroom to experience what happens daily and celebrate how much they have learned. My daughter invited her grandma to visit, and there was one thing that stood out to her the most. My daughter decided they would play with Legos. What she said next was so profound and insightful:

“I wonder what this is going to be!”

She didn’t have a plan or instructions to follow. She didn’t have a preconceived idea of what she was going to build. She simply started, finding joy and wonder in the process. It was a reminder of something we tend to lose as we grow older—our childlike curiosity and faith.

When Did We Lose Our Wonder?

As we step into adulthood, we become planners. We strategize, create routines, diagnose, and label everything we do. While structure can be helpful, we often lose the ability to just be—to create, explore, and experience life without expectation. But Jesus tells us:

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 18:3

Childlike faith isn’t just about belief—it’s about trust, curiosity, and openness to God’s movement in our lives. What if part of deepening our faith is rediscovering the joy of wonder?

A Challenge: Step Into the Unknown

This week, I want to invite you to reconnect with that wonder. Not with a structured plan. Not with an end goal. But with an open heart, asking, “I wonder what this is going to be?”

Here are a few simple ways to engage:

Try intuitive painting – Pick up a brush, choose some colors, and let yourself create without judgment. See what unfolds.

Dance without choreography – Put on music and move however your body leads you. Feel the freedom in movement.

Go on a walk with no destination – Let yourself explore without mapping it out. Pay attention to what you notice along the way.

Write without a topic – Open a journal and simply start writing whatever comes to mind.

The goal isn’t productivity—it’s presence. It’s allowing yourself to engage with God, not to “get something” from Him, but simply to be with Him in the process.

How This Deepens Your Faith

Engaging in activities with childlike wonder isn’t just fun—it’s spiritual. Here’s how it strengthens our faith:

It teaches surrender. Letting go of control in small ways helps us trust God in the bigger ones.

It opens us to hearing God. When we engage without overthinking, we create space to receive His whispers.

It promotes joy. Joy isn’t just a feeling; it’s a practice of delighting in what God places before us.

It strengthens obedience. Saying yes to small moments of play makes it easier to say yes when He calls us forward.

It reminds us of our identity. We are His children, created to explore, create, and delight in Him.

An Invitation

What is one thing you can do this week to step into curiosity? What if you approached it with no expectation, only the wonder of discovery? You might just find yourself drawn closer to the heart of God.

So go ahead—build, paint, dance, write, explore. And as you do, listen for His voice. Because He is in the process just as much as the outcome.
